What is a PDO thread lift?

A thread lift is a minimally-invasive alternative for patients who aren’t ready to commit to a complete facial lift or other aggressive surgical procedure. While not as dramatic as a facelift, PDO thread lifts improve the appearance of wrinkles and skin laxity while stimulating your body’s natural collagen production capabilities to add volume in the targeted regions. PDO thread lifts produce an immediate lift because of the threads under your skin, but they also produce long-lasting results by increasing the collagen quantity in your skin.

PDO is short for polydioxanone and refers to the type of sutures used in the thread lift; a flexible, durable, biocompatible, and absorbable polymer that produces the necessary lift and gradually dissolves in your body. PDO sutures are available in three primary textures. Each type of thread is used for different purposes, depending on your cosmetic concerns and goals:

Mono threads are smooth sutures used to provide a gentle lift
Cog threads are very finely barbed sutures that provide a greeter lift and stimulate more collagen production

What to expect during a PDO thread lift

Local anesthesia is administered to ensure a pain free and comfortable treatment. Dr. Ataii will then place needles into carefully chosen treatment areas, to thread the PDO sutures beneath the skin surface. The barbed texture of PDO sutures grasp and suspend the skin to produce an immediate lift.

Downtime and recovery

Expect to feel a brief, mild discomfort shortly after the procedure. This doesn’t last long as is typically manageable without pain medication. Avoid touching or washing your face for 12 hours, and aim to limit facial movements for 24 hours. After the first day, you can resume most non-strenuous activities. Stick to a soft food and liquid diet for 7 to 10 days. You can resume most of your daily activities within a week, avoiding heavy exercise for 2 - 3 weeks.

Results

PDO thread lifts provide immediate results because they lift your skin up from within, making your face appear fuller and more lively. Over time, the PDO threads will be safely absorbed by the body, but you’ll maintain the results because your body will have produced collagen to add natural volume to the skin. Your cosmetic results will continue improving as your body continues producing collagen. Maintenance treatments are recommended approximately every 18 months.

Am I a candidate for a PDO thread lift?

PDO thread lifts are ideal for patients with early signs of mild to moderate facial aging, such as fine lines, mild wrinkles, sagging skin, and loss of facial volume. PDO thread lifts are not ideally suited for patients with excessive skin tissue or severe signs of aging. Dr. Ataii will recommend the ideal procedure for your specific skin conditions and expectations.
