Migraine and tension headaches can cause debilitating pain, nausea and interfere with daily activities. If you are one of the approximately 35 million Americans that suffer from a migraine and/or tension headaches, you understand the difficulties in trying to find relief. Prescription and over the counter medications only provide a temporary relief, but fortunately, there may be a more permanent long term solution available through your cosmetic surgeon.

According to recent research, studies and testing, Botox injections can safely provide effective prevention and relief of migraine and tension headaches. Researchers discovered that the primary reason a migraine occurs is due to contraction of the muscle that is located in the temples. Patients, who received Botox treatments for help in diminishing wrinkles and fine lines, also found that they had relief from their migraines following their Botox injection for a period of three to four months.

Botox is well-known for reducing wrinkles by preventing the release of acetylcholine, which causes muscle relaxation and resolves muscle spasticity. Studies have shown that during this process, various pain neuropeptides are reduced and the sensation of pain is blocked. Specific points of the scalp and back of the head are injected with the Botox, which temporarily stops excessive contraction of the muscles in the areas, which in turn relieves the pain in your head and neck. Chronic muscle contractions in these areas are what create a tension headache, but the relaxation resulting from the Botox prevents the contractions and the pain.

It is recommended that Botox injections should be done about once every 12 weeks for the treatment of migraines and tension headaches. During the initial visit, your cosmetic surgeon will diagnose your migraines by discussing with your where your trigger points are. Your head has four areas where the trigger point may be, including the lateral part of the eye, the frontal area, between the brow and the back of the head. Once the surgeon has identified the correct location, he will inject Botox to relieve any pressure you may have.

Botox is effective in treating migraines and little to no side effects. Regardless of the trigger area and following treatment, approximately 80-90% of patients have relief. Botox treatments for migraines and tension headaches is different than medications, in that the medications are used after the pain begins and Botox prevents the pain from the beginning.
