Improve your skin texture

If you suffered from acne that is now under control, you may still have to face the scars that acne leaves behind. When you have signs of acne scarring, it can affect your self-esteem and feelings of self-confidence. As the scars can create an uneven, lumpy appearance to the facial skin, cosmetics are often not enough to hide the damage.

Long after the acne itself has cleared, you may find yourself embarrassed by the unsightly scars left behind, and you may fear that there is no solution. Acne scarring can range significantly in severity, from pale, surface-level blemishes, to deep red or purple scars that are pitted, also known as “ice-pick scars.” Fortunately, there are a variety of treatments available that can significantly improve your skin’s texture and improve the appearance of acne scarring. Our qualified physician at Laser Cliniqúe can discuss the available options and which treatment might be best for you.

Acne Scar Treatment Options

Laser Resurfacing

With laser resurfacing, light waves are used to destroy the outer layer of damaged skin. This prompts the development of new skin cells. Over time, your skin will have a marked reduction in acne scars and have an improved texture. Some options include the Active FX, Deep FX, Scaar FX and/or Total FX laser treatments. The different options use different types of lasers, and are better suited for certain cases – some versions of the procedure, for example, are more effective for use on skin of a darker pigmentation, while others work best on certain depths of acne pitting. Laser resurfacing takes longer to heal than some other treatments, but is also associated with exceptionally high rates of patient satisfaction. Because the laser burns off the top layer of skin, the procedure requires some downtime – new skin is typically regrown within ten days, though it may take up to 18 months to fully heal and achieve normal pigmentation.

Photorejuvenation

Photorejuvenation works by using a laser light source to stimulate the skin’s production of collagen. It creates tiny, superficial wounds in the skin’s surface, which then activates the body’s natural response to heal itself, producing new, smoother tissue. After a series of several treatments, you will start noticing results of the treatment. Since the laser light source does not remove any skin layers, there is no downtime and no recovery period.

Vibradermabrasion

Vibradermabrasion is similar to microdermabrasion treatments and treats acne scars by sloughing off the damaged top layers of skin. While microdermabrasion blasts the surface of the skin with tiny crystals, vibradermabrasion instead employs paddles with an abrasive surface that rapidly vibrate, exfoliating the skin. In addition to encouraging the production of collagen, vibradermabrasion can reveal skin with a healthy glow and a refined texture.

Chemical Peels

During a chemical peel, outer layers of scarred and damaged skin are removed, which stimulates the growth of new skin cells. Specifically, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which causes the skin to blister and then peel over the course of several days. When the skin regrows, it is smoother and younger-looking, and the appearance of acne scars is greatly reduced. Depending on the type of chemicals used, you may have almost no downtime or possibly several days where your activities will be limited by swelling. Regular treatments can minimize acne scarring and reveal smoother, healthier-looking skin.

Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy is non-invasive and uses light and a photosensitizing agent to improve the appearance of your skin. Specifically, this treatment can treat acne, acne scars, minimize pores and reduce the size of the oil glands.

Microneedling for Acne Scars

Microneedling is a minimally-invasive treatment method that utilizes a handheld device with a grouping of tiny needles. The motorized device is passed over the skin in the affected area, treating the first few layers of skin with tiny “micro-injuries.”

The micro-injuries engage your body’s natural regenerative process. Collagen and elastin are produced during the healing process. They work together to rejuvenate the skin in the treated area. Treatments typically take less than an hour, but will vary depending on the size of the treatment area.

Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling is a natural solution for acne scar treatment because it does not involve the use of other chemicals or fillers. Your own collagen and elastin are used to fill in scars from within the skin and reduce discoloration on the surface. The procedure and recovery are relatively painless because the microneedling device only comes in contact with the first few layers of skin. All evidence of your treatment should vanish in one to two days.

Some skin rejuvenation treatments cause skin discoloration in people with darker complexions. Microneedling will not discolor the skin, so this versatile procedure can be enjoyed by virtually any skin tone.

Expected Results

Collagen and elastin production begin immediately and will continue for a few weeks. Even after just one treatment you will likely see a noticeable improvement in your skin’s tone and texture. A few sessions may be necessary depending on the size and severity of your acne scars. Treatments are typically four to six weeks apart. Once completed, your smooth and radiant skin can take years off your appearance. Distracting acne scars will fade, and the collagen production will give you a youthful glow.

Microneedling with PRP

Another benefit of microneedling is the ability to combine the procedure with other topical treatments to magnify the results. The tiny channels created by the microneedling device allow for deeper penetration of vitamin-rich creams or serums. Perhaps most common is platelet-rich plasma, or PRP.

PRP is a concentration of your body’s natural growth factors. During your appointment, a small sample of your blood will be spun in a centrifuge to isolate the beneficial compounds for use in conjunction with your microneedling treatment. When PRP is applied to the treatment area, the growth factors expedite the healing process and enhance your results with even smoother, brighter skin. Both of the procedures utilize your body’s natural processes to revitalize your skin without the use of harsh chemicals.

Treat Acne Scars with Bellafill

Acne scars can also be treated with long-lasting Bellafill injectable filler. It contains two compounds: polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres which are suspended in a collagen solution. The two work together to smooth the skin and reduce the appearance of acne scars for up to one year.

Adult men and women can both benefit from Bellafill. In rare cases, certain allergies or blood disorders can exclude you from the treatment. Polymethyl methacrylate is safe and has been used in the medical field for over 60 years.

How it Works

Once injected into indented scars, the collagen goes to work immediately and raises the scar to match the surrounding skin. The PMMA microspheres initiate your body’s own collagen production and provide support and structure under the skin. The filler reduces the appearance of pitted scars for smooth and supple skin.

Unlike other fillers that can break down after a few months, Bellafill is FDA approved to last for a year. Recovery time is short and easy because of the non-surgical nature of the treatment. Bellafill can be combined with other skin rejuvenation procedures to further improve the look and feel of your skin.
