Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic treatment designed to buff away lines, wrinkles and acne damage. It uses an exfoliating material and a machine applicator to buff away the top layers of skin where much of the damage is located. The end result is new, fresh, more youthful skin. Whether you have specific skin complaints you’d like to address, or are simply looking shave a few years off the appearance of your face, microdermabrasion is a gentle yet effective procedure that could be the answer for you.
Conditions that can be treated with Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a non-intrusive procedure, affecting only the most superficial layers of the skin. As such, it is typically not considered the best option for treating deep pitted scars or severe wrinkles. However, it has been shown to be effective in minimizing the appearance of fine wrinkles, shallow lines in the skin, and scars left behind by acne. Depending on the severity of the skin’s condition, it can also be used in the treatment of active cases of acne, though only a qualified doctor can assess whether this may be a viable option for you.
Blackheads, enlarged pores, and age spots can also be effectively treated with microdermabrasion – this procedure can greatly reduce their appearance. It can also be used to reduce the visibility of stretch marks, and to treat hyperpigmentation, a condition in which darker patches form on the skin. Even if you aren’t experiencing any of these specific skin problems, our San Diego microdermabrasion is used by many to combat the ravages of time.
Collagen is the substance found in the skin that give it its structure and elasticity – while it is found in abundance in the skin of children, it decreases significantly as we age, causing wrinkles and sagging skin. Microdermabrasion is effective in increasing collagen for firmer, more youthful looking skin.
The treatment is more intense than the exfoliating treatments you can do at home. If you were to try to do the same treatment at home, you would likely damage your skin. Because of this, you must choose a San Diego medical spa for this treatment.
Microdermabrasion vs. Dermabrasion: Why it's Better
Microdermabrasion is a less intense variation of a procedure known as dermabrasion. Dermabrasion was developed to treat pockmarks, acne scars, and scars or blemishes left from accidents or disease, though it is not typically effective for congenital defects such as moles, birthmarks, etc. For dermabrasion, the area to be treated is thoroughly cleaned and numbed with an anesthetic, iced, and potentially even sprayed with a cryogenic solution, depending on the intensity of treatment needed. A wire brush or diamond wheel with rough edges is then applied to the skin. It rotates rapidly, injuring the skin and removing the top layers. As the skin then heals, it will be younger, stronger, and with minimized defects and blemishes. Because this process injures the skin, healing takes some time – regrowth of skin typically occurs in five to eight days, but this new skin may remain a shade of pink or red until six to twelve weeks after the procedure is performed. It is also contraindicated for people with darker skin tones, as permanent discoloration could occur.
Microdermabrasion relies on the same basic process of removing the outer layers of skin, but causes significantly less damage than dermabrasion does. Microdermabrasion is similar in intensity to a thorough exfoliation, and requires no anesthetic or downtime. Skin is often reddish or pink immediately after the treatment, but this effect typically wears off within 24 hours. Traditionally, the procedure is performed by spraying small, rough crystals onto the skin, which are then buffed off to gently remove the outermost layer of skin. The treatment is not aggressive enough to cause bleeding.
Why Crystal Free Microdermabrasion is your best choice
The traditional treatment uses crystals to buff away the skin. In this process, crystals are used to effectively “blast” the dead cells off the surface of the skin, and then both the crystals and skin cells are vacuumed off the skin’s surface. However, for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin, this can be damaging and even painful. In some case, loose crystals can also get into the eyes during this procedure, causing considerable irritation. Crystal free microdermabrasion is an alternative that allows patients to experience the benefits of this treatment without the potential pain and damage of the crystals.
This procedure is less abrasive on your skin, yet still provides the same benefit of younger, rejuvenated skin. Also, crystal-free treatment creates fewer problems with airborne particles on the skin and in the air.
The cost for crystal free treatment is a bit higher, but if you look at reviews from patients who have had the crystal free microdermabrasion, you will see that the gentler treatment is typically considered the best choice, particularly for those with sensitive skin.
For crystal-free, also known as “non-particulate” microdermabrasion, no foreign particles are introduced to the surface of the skin, which is a reason that many doctors prefer this treatment. It uses a diamond-tipped instrument to exfoliate the skin, and then a suction function to remove the dead cells. The diamond tip is four times harder the crystals, and has been shown to be twice as effective at removing the outermost layer of dead skin cells for a healthier, rejuvenated appearance. Other variations of crystal-free microdermabrasion include the use of various reusable or disposable paddles to exfoliate the skin.
