FAQ’s for Laser Hair Removal

What are the advantages of having Laser Hair Removal?

Longer lasting results than other temporary hair removal methods such as waxing, shaving, electrolysis, threading, tweezing or plucking.

The laser uses a wide tip that treats many hairs at once instead of treating hair-by-hair like tweezing, plucking or electrolysis.  Large areas, such as the back or legs, can be treated in a short period of time.

Laser Hair Removal is a safe, fast, gentle and effective method for permanent hair reduction.

Is the procedure safe?

The lasers used at this office for laser assisted hair removal are the safest lasers available today.  While other lasers are available for this procedure, they all run the risk of side effects because they use the heat from much longer laser pulses to destroy the hair.  Because the laser produces light in such short pulses, it destroys the hair through a photomechanical method and does not heat the surrounding skin to the same degree as other lasers.  Both the Lightsheer and the Q-Switched Nd Yag laser can easily and safely be used with much less risk of blistering, scarring and changes in pigmentation.

How does Laser Hair Removal work?

The laser light, which is directed at the hair, penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the follicle beneath the hair.  As the light is absorbed, it is converted to heat, which in-turn produces inflammation - eliminating the hair follicle's ability to grow new hair.  A series of Laser Hair Removal treatments is required to maximize the results.

The treatment does have a slight prickly sensation.  Most patients are able to tolerate the treatment without difficulty.  However, since every person's level of sensitivity is different and treatment areas may vary.

How long does a Laser Hair Removal treatment take?

The treatment time depends on size of area(s) you wish to have treated. For example, the underarms may take ten (10) minutes to treat, the legs may take forty five (45) minutes to treat.

How many Laser Hair Removal treatments are required?

Typically 6 to 9 treatments are required.  Most patients are able to discontinue treatments after the 6th time, however, an occasional touchup may be needed.  This is providing that the recommended treatment schedule is followed.  It is also important to understand, results may vary depending on the individuals hair type, certain medications you are on, hormone levels, pregnancy and/or peri-menopause.

How long does it take to recover from Laser Hair Removal?

There is NO downtime although you will need to keep the treated areas out of direct sun after treatment.

The treated areas will redden which is the desired skin reaction. The redness usually subsides within a few minutes to a few hours and returns to normal.  You are able to reapply your make-up, return to work, and continue with your normal daily activities immediately following treatment.

When can I expect to see results from my Laser Hair Removal?

After your initial treatment, you may notice a significant reduction of hair.  With each treatment, you will see a difference in the areas being treated.  You should notice a significant reduction after your series of treatments have been completed.
