Acne can develop for a number of reasons. It is caused when the tiny hair follicles in the skin are clogged by dead skin cells and sebum, the oily substance that lubricates the hair and skin. This leads to a buildup of bacteria, causing acne outbreaks.
This buildup and imbalance that causes acne can sometimes be attributed to hormonal changes, endocrine conditions, smoking, lack of sleep or stress, certain medication, and genetics.
There are three types of acne patients can suffer from, ranging from mild to severe.
Comedonal, or noninflammatory, acne
This form of acne is the mildest. It appears as whiteheads and blackheads over the affected skin.
Inflammatory acne
Inflammatory acne is more severe, including pink bumps across the skin and pustules, which are pink bumps with white pus.
Cystic acne
This is the most severe type of acne. It consists of large, painful, red bumps with or without pus that often result in scars on the skin.
BLU-U is a light treatment designed for mild to moderate forms of acne. It is a non-invasive treatment that uses a high intensity blue light to kill acne-causing bacteria. The procedure is pain-free and can be completed in as little as 15 minutes.
A chemical peel provides deep exfoliation and removes layers of damaged skin. This allows for fresh, healthy skin cells to come to the surface. During this treatment, a solution containing alpha-hydroxy acids (fruit acids) or beta-hydroxy acids (salicylic acid) will be applied to your skin. Light, medium and strong are the different levels of chemical peels you can receive.
Photodynamic therapy is non-invasive and uses light and a photosensitizing agent to improve the appearance of your skin. Specifically, Photodynamic therapy treatment can treat acne, acne scars, minimize pores and reduce the size of the oil glands.
