How laser hair removal works

Laser hair removal uses the power of a concentrated laser beam that passes through the skin, targeting hair follicles. The laser light, which is directed at the hair, penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the follicle beneath the hair. As the light is absorbed, it’s converted to heat, which in turn produces inflammation. This process slows hair growth and often prevents hair from ever growing back in the treated areas. The laser will target only the hair follicles, and therefore does not cause damage to the skin.

Laser hair removal treatment details

Pre-treatment tips:

  • Do not wax or tweeze any hairs that will be treated for at least six weeks.
  • Avoid sun exposure for three days before treatment to prevent pigmentation.
  • Shave the day before laser removal using a brand-new, clean razor.
  • Wear clothing that will make it easy to treat the area.

Before your laser hair removal begins, your skin will be cleansed and you will be given protective glasses. If there are stray hairs in the treatment area, they will be shaved. Your specialist will then use a handheld laser device on your skin that has a wide tip that treats many hairs at once, instead of going “hair-by-hair” like tweezing, plucking or electrolysis does. This can significantly reduce your total treatment time, even for larger areas like the legs. The feeling of the laser feels like a prickling sensation, and is often compared to a small, hot rubber band being snapped on your skin, but most patients find it very tolerable. To minimize any discomfort of the procedure, we use lasers that feature a cooling device at the tip.

Typically, 6-9 laser hair removal treatments are required to get the best results. Most patients can stop treatments after their sixth appointment, with occasional touch-ups as needed.

Recovery and results

There are typically very few side effects from laser hair removal. You may notice redness and slight swelling at the treatment site, but this usually subsides within 1-2 days. In the meantime, aloe vera can be used on any areas that may feel hot. After your first laser hair removal treatment, you may notice a considerable reduction of hair in the lasered area. You will see more and more of a difference with each session you complete. For the best results and smoothest recovery, avoid the following:

  • Puncturing the skin in any way
  • Removing any hairs in the treated area
  • Activities that may make you sweat for 24 hours
  • Hot water for at least 24-48 hours
  • Makeup or perfume near the lasered area for 24-48 hours
  • UV exposure for one week
  • Any type of skin treatments in the lasered area for two weeks

Who makes the ideal candidate for laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal works by identifying the melanin pigment within the hair follicles and targeting it for destruction. Therefore, the best candidates for laser hair removal should have dark hair and lighter skin. The darker the skin is, the less effective the laser energy is in penetrating the roots of the follicles. (This is also why it’s critical that you avoid tanning in the sun, spray-tanning, or baking in a tanning bed for a week before your session.)

Individuals with grey or white hair are not typically good candidates for laser hair removal because their hair follicles are void of the necessary pigment to make the laser energy effective. Those with naturally darker skin tones can be treated with new improved lasers designed to remove unwanted hair without causing hyperpigmentation. Our team at Laser Cliniqúe will help to determine the best type of laser for your unique skin and hair combination.

FAQ

Is laser hair removal safe?

The lasers that we use at Laser Cliniqúe are the safest lasers available. They can be easily and safely used with much less risk of blistering, scarring, and changes in pigmentation than previous laser technology. In addition, our team is highly trained and skilled in laser treatments.

How much does laser hair removal cost?

The cost of laser hair removal will vary depending on the area being treated, and if the session itself is a one-time treatment or part of a package. Packages reduce costs per session. For example, a face treatment could cost $199, while a four-session treatment package might reduce that to $150 per treatment. We will be able to give you an exact cost for your specific needs during your consultation.

How long will my treatment take?

The treatment time will depend on the size of area(s) you wish to have treated. For example, the underarms may take 10 minutes to treat, but the legs may take 45 minutes to treat. Once we know what areas you would like to have treated, we will be able to give you a time estimate.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

We never like to say that laser hair removal is permanent, because every patient is different — with different amounts of hair, thickness of hair, and different skin types — that will affect the results. Medications and hormones levels will also play a part in how effective the treatment is. The process essentially thins out your hair so much that it’s either completely gone or extremely fine. At that point, most patients only need to come back every 2-3 years for a touch-up. On average, you can expect a series of laser hair removal treatments to achieve 90%-95% hair reduction.
