Researchers Identify How Skin Ages, Loses Fat and Immunity
Recent research into skin health has identified what occurs within the skin structure during aging. Understanding the research requires first understanding “fibroblasts.” These are cells in the connective tissues of the body that produce collagen and other fibers that provide:
- and healing the skin.
Some of these specialized cells have the capacity to morph into the fat cells that provide the plump, firm look and feel of healthy skin, while producing a peptide (amino acids linked together in chains) that fight infections.
Skin and Fat: A Winning Combination
When you look at a child’s skin, it looks plump and firm. Children and young people have skin in which these fibroblasts convert into fat cells beneath the skin. As people age, the body loses its ability to make this conversion. How this occurs was discovered by Richard Gallo, MD, Ph.D., a professor and chair of the Department of Dermatology at San Diego School of Medicine.
Skin Healing Peptides
Dr. Gallo discovered that a protein controlling a range of cell functions eventually stops the dermal fibroblasts from converting into fat cells and producing the healing peptide. Children can heal from a skin injury far more quickly than an adult, a result of the abundance of these peptides. Dr. Gallo’s research opens the door to new treatments that could halt the progression of skin aging by turning off the body function that stops the conversion of fibroblasts to fat cells. In testing his discovery, already great strides have been achieved on mouse models.
The Infant Immune System and the Future of Skincare
We all would love to maintain the firm, supple, healthy skin of a child. The infant immune system works quickly and effectively. This discovery could in time, lead to treatments that restore the quality of skin from within by inhibiting the natural progress of aging. The skin provides the first line of defense against invading pathogens in the environment and keeping it firm and healthy does more than keep it looking beautiful, fresh, and healthy – it wards off the development of range of health conditions.
